‘Sandy' the Great White shark kept in San Francisco aquarium
On August 19, 1980, Tomales Bay fisherman Al Wilson discovered a great white shark feasting on his net of starry flounder. He knew just what to do: gently squeeze its gills and tap its head to keep it alive as he slowly brought it to shore.
Wilson then contacted the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco.
This catch marked the beginning of an extraordinary week in Bay Area ichthyology. Through meticulous preparation, deep scientific knowledge, marketing prowess, and a stroke of luck, the California Academy of Sciences managed to keep the first great white shark in captivity at their aquarium for five days.
The Chronicle reported, “A great white shark was caught in Bodega Bay yesterday by a fisherman whose swift attention to the seven-foot fish’s delicate life system may make it the first to survive in captivity at the Steinhart Aquarium in Golden Gate Park.”
The public exhibition of the shark occurred during a period of heightened interest in sharks, fueled by the 1975 movie "Jaws." It made the Chronicle’s front page for days and broke museum admission records. While Wilson captured the shark, the driving force behind its display was the adventurous aquarium director, John McCosker. His fascination with great white sharks began in 1973, predating both Peter Benchley’s novel and Steven Spielberg’s film. McCosker, a dynamic scientist frequently appearing on local TV shows, believed that the aquarium’s new circular tank could support a great white’s need for continuous movement, ensuring a constant flow of oxygen over its gills.

"Jaws" spoof. The title means "Cod". A terrible monster threatens the beach season: the cod from Guinea. To catch the fish, local authorities count on the expertise of a Portuguese oceanographer, a fearless fisherman and baits made with Amália Rodrigues's records.
"Mr. JAWS" by Dickie Goodman (1975)

This record parodies the 1975 summer blockbuster film Jaws, featuring Dickie Goodman interviewing the shark (whom he dubs "Mr. Jaws") as well as the film's main characters, Brody, Hooper, and Quint. Goodman employs his signature "break-in" music sampling technique, where all interview responses are lyrics from popular songs of that year. The single peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in Octobe...

Killing Sean off in Jaws 4 made Marge's sacrifice in Jaws 2 kind of pointless! I always felt that Mike and Sean should have teamed up! Jaws 4 should have been Martin and Ellen retired to Vermont, and Sean became Lenny's deputy! A few miles of the coast of Amity Island, a group of sports fishermen end up in a boating accident. One of them hooks something on his line, something big. Something so powerful it pulls him overboard and beneath the water. After frantically calling out his name, the fisherman resurfaces, spluttering and panicking. Something unseen seizes him, pulling him through the water, straight at the boat! He is violently slammed into the port side of the boat, blood spatter spraying against the cabin windows. The boat lurches, a fisherman on the flying bridge loses his balance and falls in. The three remaining men scramble to save their friend from the water, As they do, they notice blood plumes billowing beneath the surface, and out of loss and fear, they start to panic. One of the men rushes for the CB radio, another starts the boat. The 3rd and 4th fishermen notice a large shape under the water, coming right at them. The boat is violently hit. All the fishermen are knocked off their feet, equipment scatters, chum buckets fall, spreading their contents over the deck. In the wheelhouse, a Fisherman powers up the boat and attempts to hit the throttle. Something big smashes through the wheelhouse windows, its weight causing the boat to capsize. Gargled screams are the last thing to be heard. Through the underwater gloom, the last remaining fisherman sees the boat sinking. Through the cloud of blood and fish guts, he sees a large shape thrashing within. He next sees a dorsal fin cutting through the swirling blood cloud. Days later, after a storm, Deputy Sean Brody is patrolling the beach in the early morning and spots debris. He goes to investigate and discovers wreckage from the boat and the remains of two of the fishermen, horrifically mauled. Sean rushes to his vehicle, and as he radios for help, in the water behind him, the Dorsal fin breaks the surface and goes under again. Sean gets the message of the incident to Woods Hole, Oceanographic Institute to Mike Brody, now a marine biologist. A great white has returned. With summer festivities about to commence, Mike and Sean race against time to stop the Shark before they have a repeat of '75 on their hands!........

I remember when this happened and what is amazing is that out of all the videos I have seen that highlights Great White sharks in captivity, this aquarium never came up. I always wondered what happened to this shark and am glad she made it out to the open ocean. I also remember when this came out there was a blonde female woman who I think was also involved - maybe she was also training to do deep diving...I was just a kid when it was televised and am in my 50s now...Great throw back! Thank you!

The great news here is the shark lived despite being caught by the fishermen. Then the shark escaped captivity and is back taking, her chances in the ocean.

No danger of attack at all. That would be the last thing the shark would be thinking of. It would be in where-the-fk-am-I mode, how do I get out of here? To an open ocean roaming creature such as this, that aquarium would be like locking a person in a cupboard.

I grew up in Bodega Bay and remember when this shark was caught. I also remember the circular aquarium at the Steinhart. Now I'm an old guy and I'm a volunteer diver at the same aquarium!

Jaws 5 (consider the amass of sharks off the Florida coast right now) there is an island in the South Pacific that a Burning Man group of wealthy surfers and whatnot head out to this remote Pacific island for the best waves, only to get marooned and preyed upon by not one but multiple sharks, four or five Great Whites for example. that would be my pitch.

The legend that is John McCosker. I had the great pleasure of meeting him about 10 years ago at the Steinhart aquarium . It had been an ambition of mine since watching this very documentary in 1984. He was such a gentleman and very gracious. An absolute credit to the sciences.
